Why Choose RV LiFePO4 Batteries?
- Safety
Lithium Iron Phosphate is a highly stable material due to the strong phosphate-oxygen bond, which results in high thermal tolerance and a lower risk of overheating and fire. Enexer LiFePO4 batteries come with smart BMS for full protection and real-time monitoring.
- Longer Lifespan
RV LiFePO4 Batteries offer a much longer lifespan with thousands of charge and discharge cycles.
- High Discharge Rate
High current output makes them ideal for high-power applications in an RV.
- Temperature Range
This type of lithium RV battery can operate in a broader temperature range from -20°C to 60°C.
- High power density & Light Weight
With superior power density, LiFePO4 batteries store more power in smaller and lighter battery cells, significantly reducing the battery weight and space requirements.
- Easy Monitoring
In addition to built-in smart BMS for monitoring, Enexer also offers a free mobile app to track the performance and health of your LiFePO4 Batteries.
How to Choose the Best Battery For RV
Deep-cycle RV batteries can be sorted into the following four categories:
- Flooded lead-acid batteries
- Gel lead-acid batteries
- AGM lead-acid batteries
- Lithium Batteries
| Category | Charging Time | Lifespan | Total Cost of Ownership | Weight | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flooded lead-acid batteries | 8 to 12 hours | Short | High | Heavy | Regular |
| Gel lead-acid batteries | 5 to 10 hours | Medium | Medium | Heavy | Maintenance-free |
| AGM lead-acid batteries | 4 to 8 hours | Medium | Medium | Heavy | Maintenance-free |
| Lithium Batteries | 2 to 6 hours | Longest | Low | Light | Maintenance-free |
All lead-acid battery types require regular checking and maintenance. Moreover, their depth of discharge (DoD) should be limited to 50% for maximum life.
Other Essential Factors to Consider Include:
- Capacity and Power Needs
The amp-hour (Ah) rating is used to measure a battery’s total energy storage. Make a list of all the electrical devices with their daily power consumption and estimated hours of daily usage in the RV. Always use deep-cycle batteries for RV, which are designed to discharge and recharge many times.
- Depth of Discharge
It is the percentage of a battery's total capacity that has been used during a discharge cycle. Lead-Acid and AGM batteries have a DoD below 50%. On the other hand, Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries have 80-100% DoD.
- Compatibility and Safety
The battery must be compatible with the RV’s existing electrical system. While most RVs use 12-volt systems, some RVs require 6-volt batteries connected in series. Lithium batteries require a compatible charger and Battery Management System to prevent overcharging or overheating.
Install batteries—especially lead-acid and gel-cell types—in well-ventilated compartments, as they release gases during charging.
- Temperature
Charging a lithium battery below freezing temperature can damage it. Similarly, lead-acid batteries lose capacity in cold weather. Operating an RV in cold regions requires batteries with proper heating systems or thermal protection features.
Tips to Extend the Life of Your Lithium RV Battery
- Optimal State of Charge
Keeping the battery's charge level between 20% and 100% minimizes stress on the cells and maximizes the number of life cycles.
- Charging
Always use a compatible charger with settings matching the manufacturer's recommended absorption voltage. If possible, opt for a slower charge rate, which helps prolong the battery’s life.
- Temperature Management
Avoid exposure to heat and do not charge at or below 0°C. Keep lithium batteries for RV in a well-ventilated area. Consider purchasing a battery with a built-in self-heating feature if you plan to camp in freezing weather.
- Storage and Maintenance
Store the battery in a cool, dry place (ideally between 10°C and 25°C) at a charge level of approximately 50% to 60%. Periodically inspect the battery to ensure that all terminal connections are tight and there is no dust or debris.
- Monitoring Battery Health
Regularly monitor the health of Enexer Lithium LiFePO4 RV batteries with our Enexer: Connect™ battery monitor mobile app.
